Your shields drop the moment you let a glimpse of a potential different future into your mind. It seems like a unconsidered off-the-cuff thought sans consequence, but the thought opens you to possibilities that did not exist the moment before the thought existed.

I'm trying to remember my own past 'shields-down' moments after reading Rands' latest's a good reminder, as an individual contributor, to speak up when things are going poorly or when small instances of pain/frustration/anger are happening a few-too-many days in a row. I owe that to my team and to leadership and to myself to make sure that it's never a surprise when the shields start falling.
