Take the time to understand the business model of wherever it is you're working, or planning to work. That business model dictates company priorities and, for better or worse, should inform your decision on where to invest design effort. It's worth keeping in mind that sometimes the revenue can be quite far-removed from a project you're working on. The further removed a project is, the easier it can be to justify.
